Frequently asked questions

How do scholarships work?

A scholarship is an award of financial aid for a student to further their education. Scholarships are awarded based upon various criteria, mostly athletic or academic. Scholarship money is not required to be repaid. In simple terms, we can use our connections to Universities in the US and Canada to reduce the full tuition fee with Athletic and/or Academic scholarships.

What factors are considered?

The University options that are open to you are based on three main factors: your footballing ability, your academic ability and your budget. When we know the level of each of these three factors we can find the best options for you. We are very selective when recruiting GU players. We need to make sure that all of our players get multiple offers that will best suit their circumstances. Many families ask how much the average scholarship is for college men’s soccer. However, that’s pretty difficult to pinpoint. There are many variables to consider and each individual pathway is unique.

How does Gulf United make world-class education affordable?

Gulf United and your child’s talent can subsidize the University Fees. Soccer scholarships are the opportunity of a lifetime. Opportunities that are out of reach for many families. We only accept players onto our scholarship programme who we know will get significant funding.

Why the USA?

The USA is widely recognized as the best country on the planet for Universities. In fact, QS World University Ranks 2019 found that more than half of the top 20 Universities in the world are situated in USA (11 out of 20). With excellent education inevitably comes great expense. In addition to having the best Universities in the world, the USA is also the most expensive place to go to Universities.

How many scholarships has GUFC placed this year?

In the 2019/20 season, we have had 23 of our players achieve scholarships to the USA and Canada. Each of our players has different requirements and they have been placed accordingly. The earlier a player joins our programme, the more funding they will receive as each coach has a certain budget to allocate. We encourage our players to let us know if they are considering the University route and we can guide them on their next steps.

What is an external scholar?

We find our external scholars in two different ways. Firstly, in our Scholarship Showcases where we visit a city and hold event to scout for talent. The second way is through the player reaching out directly to GUFC. The process for this is very simple. The players contact us expressing their interest in becoming a scholar, GUFC will then request video footage of their matches and their background in education. We then use this information to decide if they are right for our programme. If they are, we complete the process remotely, guiding them through every step of the journey. If this is something you’re interested in, please get in touch.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

Is there a specific team for scholars?

Our scholars can play on any of our Senior Teams; First Team, Elite Development Squad, or U18s. Which team a scholar plays for is dependant on their ability and the team that will be optimum for progression.

Do I need to make a highlight video for myself?

Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. We will be filming every game to get extensive footage of you. Our team will then edit your highlights to send to colleges in the USA.

What are the academic requirements for a scholarship?

To qualify for a college academic scholarship, you will need to meet certain requirements. While these specific requirements will vary with each school, the idea is the same. If you work hard and maintain a high GPA and do well on the SAT/ACT, then you could be rewarded with an academic scholarship. Per the NCAA you need a minimum 2.0 GPA and a 1010 on the SAT as well as a combined score of 86 on the ACT.

Who covers the difference if a percentage scholarship is offered?

It would be the responsibility of the student-athlete and his/ her family to cover the remaining costs to attend the university. Scholarships are based on a sliding scale, so if you have a higher GPA then your test scores can be relatively low.

Will I receive a ‘full scholarship’?

Foreseeing the monetary value of the scholarship that could be offered is something that is almost impossible to predict. In addition to academic results, SAT test scores, timing, available budgets, and the coaches perspective of the individual’s playing ability – the college coach is the only one who could say to a prospective student athlete that they will receive ‘a full scholarship’. Gulf United cannot and do not guarantee the ultimate level of scholarship award made to our clients. The level of scholarship granted is fundamentally dependent on what the coach of the American college wants to offer.

What does a scholarship not cover?

Travel to and from America in addition to the cost of the social aspect of living in America will be funded by the student-athlete and not the university. At some schools, you will also be expected to pay for health insurance to cover you both while playing your sport and while not competing.

Do I get a refund if Gulf United fails to provide me with the scholarship offer to the college I want?

Gulf United have a 100% record of our players receiving scholarship offers. Gulf United’s role is to pre-qualify your chances of receiving a sports scholarship, then guide you through the entirety of the recruitment process with suitable American colleges and universities. The company is not permitted to charge a fee for its services based on placing clients at American colleges with suitable sports scholarships. As a result, a refund would not be provided in cases where scholarships offered to clients were deemed ‘unsuitable’ by the client. NCAA rules state, “A prospective student-athlete may allow a scouting service or agent to distribute personal information to member institutions without jeopardizing his or her eligibility, provided the fee paid to such an agent is not based on placing the prospective student-athlete in a collegiate institution as a recipient of institutional financial aid.” (see NCAA rule 12.3.3.1 ‘Talent Evaluation Services & Agents’).

Can you go on to play professional football after graduating?

One of the best things about the University system in the USA is that you can achieve a degree without sacrificing the dream of playing professional football. As with any professional sport, you have to be one of the best in the world to compete at the highest level. After completing University, the student-athlete will enter the 'MLS draft' or they can be scouted by clubs across the world.
